Same-Day Metal-Free Crowns
The old ways of waiting to obtain a traditional dental crown are all but gone with the application of the same-day metal-free crown. Waiting around for a dental crown is one of the reasons why some people put off having a dental crown put in at all. Conventional crowns can take weeks to complete, and cause much more sensitivity (not to mention, cost more in the long run) than what is necessary. However, advancements in modern dentistry have allowed for a much speedier and more comfortable process of obtaining a metal-free crown.
About metal-free crowns
In addition to the aesthetic disadvantages of metal-based crowns, many patients have allergies to metal and are not able to receive crowns that are either all-metal or metal-fused to porcelain. Our same-day crown system provides a hypoallergenic, quicker and more precise alternative to traditional metal-based dental crowns.
While metal has long been used to create custom dental crowns due to its sturdy nature, most patients and dentists actually prefer to use ceramic crowns. Ceramic crowns are generally considered to be the most lifelike type of dental crown. The high-grade medical ceramic used in same-day metal-free crowns is designed to mimic the exact light-reflecting qualities of natural teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns tend to have a more opaque appearance, standing out from the rest of the natural teeth.
How are same-day metal-free crowns made?
Using a computerized, in-office system, metal-free crowns can be created on the spot in less than two hours. Thanks to the CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) system, a customized, lifelike dental crown can be made in just one appointment. Instead of having to wait for a physical impression of the teeth to be sent off to the lab where a conventional crown is created, same-day metal-free crowns are made right in the dental office.
Thanks to the advanced CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) system, accurate dental impressions can be taken of the mouth and the prepared tooth. These impressions take minutes to complete. These images are sent off to an in-office milling machine that creates the personalized crown by carving a block of ceramic material. Just like that, patients can go from an untreated, damaged tooth to a fully restored dental crown in just one appointment.
Ceramic is hailed as the most authentic-looking material to use for dental crowns. These metal-free crowns blend seamlessly into the rest of the teeth, restoring the smile and the functionality of the bite in one day.
How much do same-day crowns cost?
Same-day metal-free crowns cost just as much as a conventional dental crown. However, consider the extra costs that are associated with conventional crowns. When considering the added cost of a temporary crown and second appointment, same-day metal-free crowns are less costly.
