Media Solutions From Our Dentist Office to Teach Your Kids to Brush Properly
At Smiles by Julia, we have a simple goal – keep our patients healthy. This can be easier said than done for while we can clean your teeth, you have to brush them at home. Fortunately, most of our adult patients are inclined towards oral health and hygiene but this can be increasingly difficult when working with kids and teens. While it may seem like teenagers would be interested in oral health, most are so busy that they often forget about it. In fact, most of our teenage patients spend their days running from school to sports and their friends house with very little time spent on things like hygiene. Our goal remains and we are constantly looking for ways to get our younger patients excited about oral health. With that in mind, we are turning to media.
Why media works –
Every generation has a way that they like to interact and receive information. Today, electronics are the form of communication that most kids prefer. Whether they study using a computer, text their friends or watch YouTube videos for information, kids of all ages are fascinated by electronics and spend a lot of time using them. Most of the time, that is for entertainment, but electronics and media can also be used as a way to deliver information that is actually useful. We have found that playing a short tutorial about how to brush teeth correctly can help kids learn better than working with an adult. Why? Because this is an unintimidating way to learn that most kids are used too. With that in mind, we recommend that you play a video for your kids a couple of times a year as a gentle reminder to brush correctly.
The American Dental Association
The ADA has come up with an innovative way to use media to teach kids how to brush for the full two minutes. If brushing correctly, this is typically the amount of time that is necessary to get your teeth really clean. Most kids and teens, however, don’t do it. With that in mind, they have an entire website that is dedicated to helping kids and parents. They have tools like a rewards chart on the site, but they also have videos. Each video is two minutes long, the exact amount of time that your kids should be brushing their teeth. Instead of boring clips, they feature popular cartoons like Adventure Time. Since your kids may be watching the show anyway, getting them to brush and watch should be easy. For the younger kids, they have more age appropriate shows as well. The goal is to play a video while they brush their teeth so that they get used to brushing for the full two minutes and will hopefully continue to do so as they age. We have found that if they can establish healthy habits now, they will usually keep these habits as an adult and be healthier for it.
When you visit Smiles by Julia, we will reinforce what you are doing at home and together, we can help your kids and even teenagers to stay in good oral health.
