Details About Dental Bridges Procedure

Dental Bridges Fort Lauderdale, FL

Missing teeth hurt us in several ways, from our self-image to our ability to enjoy a meal, but one solution to the problem is dental bridges. When you receive a dental bridge, it stays permanently in your mouth and prevents your neighboring teeth from moving. This is because teeth align themselves to one another, and when you are missing a tooth, your neighboring teeth will become crooked as they shift in the direction of the missing tooth in an attempt to cover the gap. The bridged tooth aligns with neighboring teeth and keeps them in place.

A bridge will also enhance your appearance and offer you a beautiful smile. Even if the missing tooth is in the back of your mouth and you think that no one sees it when you speak or laugh, it may become noticeable. Laughter is very good for us, and so is our speech and which is why replacing those missing teeth with a bridge can add to your quality of life in several ways. Dental bridges can also help you maintain the normal shape of your face and can even help prevent bone loss in your jaw.

Assessment

The first thing your dentist does before building the bridge is to assess your need to have missing teeth restored and whether the dental bridge is your best option. The dentist will want to examine the area around the missing tooth or teeth and probably take X-rays of the jaw to gain a complete understanding of your situation. At this point, your dentist may want to discuss the possible options for the type and design of your bridge so that you understand the advantages and disadvantages of your options.

Preparation of abutment teeth

Most of the time, when dental bridges are built, they rest on healthy teeth. Picture two healthy teeth with the bridge in between them, and the bridged teeth are attached to the healthy teeth with crowns that go over the healthy teeth.

During the preparation process, the healthy teeth that the bridge will rest on are filed down so that crowns can be placed on them. You would be given a local anesthetic for your comfort through this procedure. A temporary bridge is then put in place while your permanent bridge is being made in a laboratory.

Permanent bridge placement

As soon as the dental bridge has been made in the laboratory, it is sent to the dentist, who will call you in for your next appointment. At this appointment, the temporary teeth will be removed, and the underlying teeth will be cleaned. Dental cement would then be used to permanently fix the dental bridge with its crowns going over the healthy teeth. Once your bridge is in place, it may feel a little unfamiliar at first but give it time, and it will begin to feel like a natural part of you.

There may also need to be some final adjustments made to the bridge to make sure that your bite is comfortable. The dentist would also go over all the details about your restoration, like how well the crowns are fitting over the healthy teeth as well as the shape and shade of the bridge.
