Crowns are among the most common forms of restorative care that patients receive. Getting a cap can be an effective way of strengthening a weak tooth or preserving the structure of one that is breaking. Sometimes, it is the person’s poor oral hygiene that requires the need for a crown. A lack of brushing and flossing can cause decay, breaking down the tooth. In other instances, it could be an accident or an injury that breaks or cracks a tooth. This may happen when the person suffers a hard blow to the face.
A severe injury to the tooth may require an emergency visit to the dentist’s office. Or, the dentist may point out this need without the patient realizing there is an issue. Before putting CEREC crowns in a patient’s mouth, the dentist will explain the process. The patient should understand what to expect from this treatment.
To fit CEREC crowns over affected teeth, preparatory work is necessary. The dentist begins by numbing the patient’s mouth. Once the patient is comfortable, the dentist will reshape the tooth so that the crown will fit. To do this, the dentist will shave part of the tooth away.
Instead of making a mold out of dental plaster, the dentist will take a 3-D picture for CEREC crowns. These images go to a computer program, which will create a model of the patient’s mouth. The model renders what the tooth reconstruction will look like. From here, the crown can be made.
Unlike a traditional crown, which takes weeks until it is ready, CEREC crowns are available within an hour. The digital model goes to a milling machine in the office. This device then makes the crown out of a ceramic block. It will make the crown look just like natural teeth, including the size and shape. The dentist or an assistant will take the crown and paint it the desired color.
The dentist takes the CEREC crowns and cements them over the affected teeth. The dentist will also check the person’s bite to make sure the crowns are a good fit. Some adjustments may be necessary. The dentist will follow up with the patient in a few weeks to make sure the crowns are intact and working well.
